UNIVERSITY -38

History

Established in 1853, the University of Melbourne is a public-spirited institution that makes distinctive contributions to society in research, teaching and knowledge transfer.

Melbourne's teaching excellence has been rewarded two years in a row by grants from the Commonwealth Government's Learning and Teaching Performance Fund for Australian universities that demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching and learning.

Melbourne was also one of only three Australian universities to win ten citations -- the maximum number of awards possible -- under the Carrick Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. The citations recognise commitment by university staff who have shown outstanding leadership and innovation in teaching, and dedication and enthusiasm for student learning.

Courses offered

The university's innovative New Generation degrees have more than 80 major fields of study between them. After you graduate, you have the option of moving straight into your career or doing further study, either in a professional area or research.

Admission procedure/cycle (month/date)

As an international student, before you apply for an undergraduate course, check that you:

  • Satisfy the entry requirements for your course
  • Meet the English language requirements
  • Have or can get the appropriate visa to study in Australia
  • Understand the fees that apply, the scholarships available and that you may be eligible for financial assistance.

If you are studying year 12 in Australia, you should apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). Full details about the VTAC application process can be found at the VTAC website or by purchasing the VTAC Guide from a newsagent. All other international students may submit their applications direct to the university or through one of its overseas representatives. There is a $A100 assessment fee for applications. There are three other options:

  • Apply online: You can apply online direct to the university
  • Apply by mail: Download the application form from the official website and send it to:
  • General Manager, International Admissions, International Centre, The University of Melbourne, Victoria 3010 Australia
  • Apply in person in your country: The university has a number of overseas representatives in a variety of countries. Search its list of overseas representatives from the website to find one near you.

Application closing dates*

  • Semester 1: late December
  • Semester 2: 31 May

*Note: International students who are currently studying the VCE or IB at a Victorian secondary school apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (see closing dates for Australian undergraduate students at the official website).

For graduate international students, the considerations before applying are the same as those mentioned earlier, with one addition -- you have to think about how you will support yourself financially. The modes of application, too, are similar -- online, by mail or in person in your country.

Application closing dates

  • Semester 1 entry: 31 October (for commencement in February of the following year)
  • Semester 2 entry: 30 April (for commencement in July)

Before submitting applications for the following courses please confirm the closing date with the relevant faculty or graduate school.

  • Graduate Dental Science, Medicine, Physiotherapy coursework programmes: See the Faculty website
  • Melbourne JD: See the Melbourne Law School website
  • Graduate Physiotherapy coursework programmes: 1 September
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine: 20 December
  • Doctor of Optometry: Refer to the Melbourne Graduate School of Science website

Late applications may be accepted in special circumstances. However, students are advised to apply as early as possible to avoid visa delays.

When you are applying for graduate research at Melbourne, completing the application form is actually one of the final steps in the process. Before you start, you need to identify your research interests and potential supervisors and make a supervision enquiry. Then you are ready to complete the application form. For more details, refer to the university's website.

The scholarship application closing dates for international graduate research students are:

  • 31 August: Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship applications
  • 31 October: All other international scholarship applications
