History

For over 200 years, École Polytechnique has been a leader among the French engineering grandes écoles. This leadership is due to the quality of its students, lecturers and researchers and its single, firm objective of providing a very high level, multi-disciplinary, scientific and human education.

École Polytechnique is a world-class educational and research establishment, conveying a culture of excellence with a strong scientific leaning in the great Humanist tradition.

Its aim is to take its reputation for excellence into the international sector, and to be recognised as one of the leading teaching and research establishments (Times ranking) in the world.

École Polytechnique is a member of the ParisTech Research and Higher Education Cluster (PRES), which brings together 12 Grandes Ecoles in Paris to promote their excellence at an international level. It is also a member of the Plateau de Saclay Scientific Cooperation Foundation (FCS) which is leading the Saclay campus project with 20 other academic and scientific partners including ParisTech.

Courses offered

Through its three training cycles -- engineering, master's and doctorate -- Ecole Polytechnique trains responsible men and women who are capable of designing and leading complex, innovative activities, to meet the challenges facing the 21st century society.

In this context, École Polytechnique's Research Centre aims to study all the great scientific questions on the frontiers of knowledge, and create an environment that encourages innovation.

Admission procedure/cycle (month/date)

The polytechnic admission process includes two steps:

  • An initial selection based on the required application materials
  • A second selection through examinations in Mathematics, Physics and General scientific knowledge and motivation.

The aim of this two-step selection process is to rank by order of merit candidates qualified to benefit from Ecole Polytechnique education. For details on examinations and eligibility criteria, refer to the official website.

Students interested in following a master's programme at the École Polytechnique must follow the online application procedure. Please bear in mind that several official documents and recommendation letters are required. There can be long delays in obtaining some of these documents.

If you wish to apply for a PhD at the Doctorate School at l'Ecole Polytechnique (EDX), you should take a few moments to identify a laboratory and a subject of your interest for your PhD, establish contact with your potential PhD supervisor and send a complete CV with cover letter. The PhD proposals section will provide a list of PhD subjects and the responsible persons to be contacted.

Tentative cost of courses

International students (from outside the European Union) should pay tuition fees for the polytechnic programme. Tuition and subsistence fees are set each year, but vary slightly. They must be paid on a semester basis. Refer to the website for updated estimates.

Total tuition fees for the complete two-year master's programme amounts to €11,000. The total may be reduced depending on the duration of the programme effectively followed and the type of fee-waiver obtained.

Inscription fees for PhD students were 359€ (2010-2011). Note that inscription fees are payable every year by cheque when you renew you inscription between 1 September and 30 November until you defend your thesis. You will have to pay around 198€ per annum for health insurance. Accommodation expenses will represent the biggest part of your budget. Refer to the official website for details and updates.

Scholarships offered

Ecole Polytechnique has signed many double degree agreements, providing in some cases a study scholarship partially or fully covering tuition fees. Such undertakings do not apply to students who are awarded an excellence scholarship offered by a French public or private organisation.

A number of scholarships and fee waivers are provided for students of master's programmes. Refer to the official website for details.

It is compulsory to have a financial support for the three years of your PhD course at Ecole Polytechnique. There are various sources of funding for a PhD, depending on your profile and your project. Refer to the website for more information.
