Hundreds of Indian students may be deported from US

Hundreds of Indian students may be deported from US

Washington: The US expressed concern over any activity involving visa fraud, as several Indian students of a California-based University shut down by authorities on charges of illegal immigration were interrogated.

Hundreds of Indian students may be deported from US

Duped by the authorities of Tri-Valley University, which has now been shut down, hundreds of Indian students, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, faced the threat of being deported back home after having lost their student visa status.

"Any activity involving visa fraud would obviously be of great concern to us. The investigation of that is done by law enforcement, obviously with our cooperation, since we are the ones who issue visas," State Department spokesman P J Crowley told reporters at his daily news conference.

According to a federal complaint filed in a California court last week, the University helped foreign nationals illegally acquire immigration status.

The university is said to have 1,555 students. As many as 95 per cent of these students are Indian nationals, the complaint said. The students are reported to have paid lakhs of rupees for obtaining a visa for their category and also for students work permit.

"Since 9/11, one of the areas that we as a government have strengthened is the tracking, so that if you come here on a student visa, you have to check in and you have to go to school. That is a requirement of that programme," Crowley said.

Meanwhile, reports from the San Francisco area said a number of students have been interrogated by federal authorities as part of their investigation against the Tri-Valley University, which is being charged of part of an effort to defraud, misuse visa permits, and indulge in money laundering and other crimes.

Investigations by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) found that while students were admitted to various residential and on-line courses of the university and on paper lived in California, but in reality they "illegally" worked in various parts of the country as far as Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

ICE has called it as a "Sham University".

The ICE investigations found that more than half of these students were reported to be residing in a single apartment located in Sunnyvale California.

During the course of the investigation ICE found that the university gave the residential address of its students in order to conceal that they did not live in California, said the court papers.

For a student to maintain an active immigration status, they must show proof that they are making reasonable process toward completing coursework and physically attending classes.

Federal investigating authorities are now sweeping out on every such student, who paid lakhs for obtaining students visa and also students work permit.

Several of them have been interrogated, thus creating a panic reaction among the Indian student community.

Many of the students from Andhra Pradesh who were planning to join the university for the new semester have cancelled their US travel plans. Classes were scheduled to start on January 10 after the winter break.

It is understood that many of these students are planning to leave the country as soon as possible as they are being interrogated.

There are unconfirmed reports of some of the students being detained and deportation process has been started against them.

Once the university has been shut down, the students who come on F-1 visa, lose their status within a stipulated time.

USA risks losing out to India, China: Obama

Washington: President Barack Obama on Wednesday warned that the US risked losing out to countries such as India and China in areas like in education, technology and research, noting they were undertaking investments in these areas.

Delivering his annual State of the Union address to the US Congress, Obama made three references to India in his hour-long speech during which he said his administration has built a "new partnership" with the south Asian country as part of his efforts to shape a world that favours peace and prosperity.

Obama, who visited India in November last, also referred to the recent business agreements with India and China that would create jobs in the US. "We have reset our relationship with Russia, strengthened Asian alliances, and built new partnerships with nations like India," Obama said in the address in which terrorism and war took a backseat with the President's focus being on education and economy.
Building new relationship with countries like India, Obama said is part of his efforts to shape a world that favours peace and prosperity. Obama also unveiled his blueprint to maintain American leadership in an increasingly competitive world marked by the surge of nations like India and China.

The blueprint has four key pillars--innovate, educate, build, reform and responsibility. Obama put forward a plan to help the US win the future by out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building the global competition.

"Nations like China and India realised that with some changes of their own, they could compete in this new world," he said, adding, "So they started educating their children earlier and longer, with greater emphasis on math and science. They are investing in research and new technologies."

On the other hand, Obama said, the quality of the American math and science education lagged behind that of many other nations and the country had fallen to ninth rank in terms of the proportion of young people with a college degree.

Obama also highlighted the importance of emerging markets like India and China in creating more jobs in the US. "Recently, we signed agreements with India and China that will support more than 250,000 jobs in the United States," Obama said.

While calling for new investments in American innovation, the US President also underscored the need to reform the way the government conducted business--by investing in what makes America stronger and cutting what doesn't.

The President's Budget will help increase the nation's R and D investments, as a share of GDP, to its highest levels since President John F Kennedy.

Obama also pledged to prepare an additional 100,000 science, technology, engineering, and math teachers by the end of the decade.

Obama's India trip most successful South Asia trip ever

US President Barack Obama's India visit in November was one of the most successful trips ever taken by a US President to South Asia, a top Administration official has said.

"President's November trip to India," the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Robert Blake, in his speech at the Syracuse University, New York, said turned out to be one of the most successful trips ever taken by an American president to South Asia.

The trip produced a number of significant new milestones that showed how US and India are working together to advance global peace, security and development and illustrate why Obama believes US relations with India constitute an "indispensable partnership" for the 21st century.

Blake said the big headline-maker was, of course, the President's endorsement of a reformed United Nations that includes India as a permanent member. "The endorsement of an Indian seat on a reformed UN Security Council, as a permanent member, reflects our confidence that it is a country with which we will be working ever more closely to advance global security and prosperity," he said.

During the trip, the Indian government positioned itself to take on a leading role in enhancing global stability by finalizing a $4.1 billion sale for ten C-17 Globe master III heavy lift transport aircraft.

US risks losing out to India, China: Obama US President Barack Obama's motorcade drives toward the Capitol Hill for his the State of Union speech in Washington, DC, on January 25, 2011. AFP

"Once all the aircraft have been delivered, ladies and gentlemen, India will have the second largest C-17 fleet in the world behind the United States -- a highly visible manifestation of the US -India defense partnership," he said.

"The purchase of six C-130J transport aircraft in 2008 will provide the Indian Air Force a strategic airlift and humanitarian response capability that is unique to the region and emblematic of India's ambitions to play an increasingly global role," Blake said.

Noting that the President and the Prime Minister agreed that in this increasingly inter-dependent world, the stability of, and our access to, the air, sea, space, and cyberspace domains is vital for the security and economic prosperity of all nations, Blake said the two leaders therefore agreed to launch a dialogue to explore ways the two countries can work together, as well as with other countries, to develop a shared vision for these critical domains to promote peace, security and development.

As leaders of the two largest democracies in the world, the President and Prime Minister launched a US-India Open Government Dialogue on how India and the US can democratize access to information, support global initiatives in this area, and share their own experience.

India net job creator for US companies’

India net job creator for US companies

Washington: India is a net job creator for US companies, not the other way around, NASSCOM chief Som Mittal said today strongly refuting the public perception here that outsourcing and free trade agreements are responsible for America's current economic woes.

"India is a net job creator for US companies, not the other way around. The Indo-US economic relationship benefits the American economy and its job market in many important and tangible ways," Mittal wrote in an opinion piece in the Seattle Times.

The US has emerged as a preferred destination for Indian investment. In fact, India now ranks second, behind the UAE, in the list of fastest-growing foreign investors in the US, he argued in his article.

Observing that India has never sought publicity for its commercial connections to the US, Mittal said India it has quietly become both a major investor in America and a significant destination for American goods and services.

"It has a rapidly growing population of consumers hungry for products of many kinds. And unlike other large economies that have been suffering through recessions in recent years, India has increased its total outward foreign direct investment and devoted an increasing share of that largesse to the American market in need of financial support," he said.

Referring to a recent study by Ernst & Young, which was commissioned by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Mittal said it found that Indian companies have increased their investment in the US by more than $20 billion over the past five years.

According to the study, those investments have supported the creation of more than 65,000 American jobs.

"That number got even higher when President Obama visited India in November. At the president's summit with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, US business leaders signed export deals with India worth more than USD 10 billion to US employers like Boeing.

President Obama estimated those contracts would create 50,000 American jobs 'many in the Seattle area' in the near future, proof that America's expanding economic partnership with India is far from a one-way street," Mittal said.

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

Indian IT sector seems to have come back to its record-breaking hiring days, with a top industry player Infosys projecting up to 1.8 lakh employees being hired by the five largest companies alone this year.

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

"Growth is back and most companies are hiring in large numbers again. The top five companies are estimated to hire 1,60,000 to 1,80,000 new employees in the next 12 months," Infosys CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan said here.

Such large-scale hiring activities were last witnessed in 2007 by Indian IT companies, after which they had to cut back on hiring and even prune their existing headcount to cope up with the economic slowdown.

"In 2008, the industry saw growth coming down to single digit. Most IT companies stopped hiring employees and stopped expanding," Mr. Gopalakrishnan said at a discussion on 'sustainable Development Strategies' organised by College of Architecture here last evening.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan said that the growth was now back in the sector and the companies were expanding their headcount.

He further said, "The IT industry has grown fast over the last 15 years. For example, the industry had about 1.50 lakh employees in 1993, around five lakh employees in 1999 and today, the industry employs around 2 million employees."

The highest-ever hiring in the IT space was seen in 2007, when more than four lakh jobs were created in Indian IT space by all the companies together.

Top five IT companies to hire 1.8 lakh persons in 12 months, says Infosys

After that, the hiring fell to 2.5 lakh people in 2008 and further down to 1.5 lakh in 2009 and then just above one lakh in 2010.

Industry estimates suggest that the overall hiring in India by all the IT companies together during 2011 could exceed or at least match the levels of 2007.

Besides Indian IT firms, global giants like IBM, Accenture and HP have also been hiring aggressively in the country in the past.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan said that multinational corporations were also looking to India to expand their markets and to create back office function and many of them are looking at Tier II and III cities to expand.

Emphasising the significance of infrastructure development in growth of these cities, he said an effective mechanism is essential to implement various development strategies.

"Industry bodies, relevant NGOs, civic bodies must all have a role to play. For example, industry bodies will be able to mobilise participation by experts. Industry will be able to provide project and programme management expertise. Civic leaders will be able to mobilise public opinion.

Thus I believe there is a higher chance of the initiatives getting implemented," Mr. Gopalakrishnan said.

Bad managers adding to skills shortage

Bad managers adding to skills shortageconflict

Poor management is threatening the retention of skilled staff, according to research by specialist finance recruitment firm Robert Half.

A recent survey of 345 Australian finance, accounting and HR professionals also found 40% of employees describe the management skills of the person they report to as average or below.

“Given the increasing skills shortage, organisations can’t afford to have ineffective managers pushing staff over the edge and into other job opportunities,” said Kevin Jarvis, Director of Robert Half.

The survey found that there is a perception gap between how managers rate their own skills and how employees rate the skills of their manager.

  • 38% of managers say they consistently lead by example; however only 20% of employees agree.
  • 41% of managers say they consistently show interest in their staffs problems; however only 23% of employees agree.
  • 33% of managers believe they set realistic goals; however only 17% of employees agree.
  • 22% of managers think that they inspire their team; however only 17% of employees agree.

“Facing up to professional flaws can be a blow to the ego for many managers. However, taking the steps to improve management skills is crucial to employee retention in the current market,” said Jarvis.

The survey also found 42% of employees would leave if they thought another company had a better management structure.

“If issues between staff and management are not resolved swiftly, many organisations could see staff leaving in the New Year,” he said.

To improve relations between employees and managers, Jarvis suggests organisations employ better management training that identifies and resolves issues in an appropriate manner.

“Managers need to discuss realistic goals with employees and set up effective methods to address staff problems,” said Jarvis.

“Strong and effective management skills are key to employee satisfaction and retention, as well as the continued success of an organization,” he said.

History and geography graduates in demand

History and geography graduates in demand

geography

Geography and history teaching graduates will be among the most sought-after educators alongside maths and science teachers in coming years, experts predict.

Those opting for a career in teaching are being encouraged to consider the once traditional disciplines, as geography and history become compulsory subjects under the new Reception to Year 10 national curriculum.

New South Wales is the only state that has taught geography and history as stand-alone subjects in high school in the past 20 to 30 years.

Other states and territories, like SA, teach the subjects as part of an integrated social studies course until the final years of high school.

As a result, geography and history teachers in SA have been on the decline, a situation exacerbated by an ageing workforce.

Changes to the new South Australian Certificate of Education, in which the number of Year 12 subjects next year will be reduced from five to four, will also affect the take-up of history and geography and the number of teachers required.

As a result, the Geography Teachers Association of SA has warned that shortages will be even more severe once the national curriculum is rolled out from 2011.

President Alexandra Piggott says the challenge is to ensure schools understand the importance of employing specialist geography and history teachers.

``With the whole Studies of Society and Environment umbrella, there is a perception that history and geography are kind of the same and can therefore be taught by either a historian or a geographer,'' she says. ``The reality is that geography is a spatial science and is quite a different animal from history, and vice versa, (so) ultimately it will depend on whether schools choose to have specialists teaching geography or not.''

The History Teachers Association of SA's president Paul Foley is adamant that once geography and history are introduced as stand-alone subjects, graduates will be in demand.

He says the association is urging SA universities to considering offering history methods - a more rigorous approach to history education - at tertiary level to ensure quality graduates.

``Only a limited number of universities, mostly in the eastern states, offer history methods,'' he says.

``The current path is to do a bachelor of arts majoring in history. That's been OK up until now. That's why we are waiting on the universities . . . there are great opportunities to step forward.''

The association has sought a commitment among education ministers, schools and universities that:

SECONDARY history teachers have completed at least one history major in their first degree and a one-year history methods program.

PRIMARY teachers have a firm foundation in primary school content of the national syllabus and an understanding of history and history pedagogy appropriate to the primary setting.

Walford College geography teacher Yolanda Hyde, 27, hopes the profession will receive a boost of younger graduates in the future.

``Geography really offers the world to students,'' she says.

``It encourages them to explore and learn things about themselves, discover interests and sparks a desire to travel.''

Strong end to 2010 spurs positive outlook for 2011

Strong end to 2010 spurs positive outlook for 2011newyear

The number of job vacancies increased 3.2 per cent nationwide in 2010, compared to 2009, according to the latest data from IPA Recruitment.

The growth in vacancies is a positive sign that "more people are doing more work" and that the dust may have finally settled post Global Financial Crisis, according to Tricia Phillips, CEO of IPA Recruitment.
"In 2010 we hit some peaks in confidence, but as fast as we became confident, we became cautious again. The employment market will still remain volatile in 2011 as we continue to witness a two speed economy," Phillips says.
"Until recently most candidates have stayed in their jobs as the market was unstable. As we have seen a reduction in the number of redundancies, candidates are beginning to gain more confidence. In 2011 we are expecting a higher influx of migrants so this could bring additional movement to the market."

Industries currently experiencing strong demand for candidates include food and transport and logistics.  We can also expect the roles that were first to be cut off the budget during the Global Financial Crisis will start to come back on the vacancy lists for employers and recruiters.

Quality of candidates will remain the biggest issue for employers in 2011.  Given the speed of technology and therefore the  number of ‘touch points’ an employer can use to find candidates, this can also present new challenges.  As employers drive up the volume of candidates that approach the organisation, they must deal with the counter-productive aspect that this can create a longer recruitment process to find the right quality. Businesses need to make the recruitment process smooth and stick to a clear timeline – candidates will often judge an employer by the recruitment process.
While 2010 was positive overall, job orders dropped 17.9 per cent in December – nothing out of character for this as manufacturing softens at this time and therefore presents a normal hold on hiring activity for most companies. In saying this IPA Recruitment is seeing strong number of permanent hires already in January which means employers have been pre-planning in December allowing newly-hired workers to hit the ground running in the New Year.
In predicting which sector will dominate in 2011, Phillips suggests mining and associated industries will continue to lead the way:

"Australia is a resources rich country and this will continue to be our strength this year and going forward," she says.

"This naturally means Western Australia will boom out of the employment markets and whilst Queensland is in the middle of devastating floods, after an expensive and protracted cleanup that may result in a slow start to 2011, the continuing appetite for resources will again drive employment growth in this market. Equally business associated with the mining and resources market will also continue to enjoy an upturn."
"This time of year people start to think about their career goals and begin looking for the bigger better role somewhere else. It is important that employers make retention a priority in January. Employers need to engage staff and look at training and development options for 2011."
"Equally, candidates need to have clear career goals and have a realistic salary expectation based on skills and experience."

Top 10 career resolutions for the new year

Ten career resolutions for the new yearspring

Like the old saying, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life," it's never a bad time to start moving your career in a better direction. Here are 10 New Year's resolutions to help.

  1. Pay Attention in Class
Treat every workday like a school day. Be sure you learn something and use it to make yourself more productive. It doesn't have to relate to your skills set. It may be as simple as understanding how to work with specific peers or emotional intelligence. Take mental notes. Don't sleepwalk through the day.
  2. Look for the Next Rung
You need to excel at your job. This is how you gain credibility. But understanding your next step is key to career happiness. Career pathing is critical to remaining engaged on the job. Schedule discussions with your manager to get clarity on the next challenge. If you don't get on with your team or your company, it may be time to look elsewhere.
  3. Understand Company Goals
Make sure you understand how your job contributes to your company's business objectives. Are you in a revenue-generating role? A brand-awareness role? Is your mission to delight the customer? Knowing how your job fits into the big picture will give you inspiration and a sense of accomplishment -- and will help you understand your job's impact.
  4. Be Ethical
Bring integrity to your job. Whether you're running the company or cleaning its bathrooms, be honest in all you do. Don't call in sick just to get a day off -- that's stealing. Put in an honest day's work. Be accountable. If you're working remotely, be sure you are. Do what you say you're going to do. Honesty and reliability mean a lot to your manager.
  5. Stay Fit
OK, this was probably on your last New Year's resolutions list, but that's because it's so important. Try to break a sweat for 20 minutes, three days a week. Go for a walk at lunch. Join a gym. Lift weights. A healthy body makes a healthy mind. Exercising increases blood flow to the brain and gives you ideas. You'll be more productive at work, and best of all, you'll feel better.
  6. Stretch Your Role
Occasionally think how you can go above and beyond. Are there projects outside your defined role you could help with? Be proactive; ask to join. Come up with your own ideas, and work with your manager to implement them. If you're a hamster, step off the wheel and poke your head out of the cage. Stretch a little. This won't go unnoticed.
  7. Manage Up
Make sure you and your manager are in firm agreement on what you're doing. Be proactive and get on his or her calendar to ensure you're meeting or exceeding expectations. Don't assume your manager is paying close attention. There are bad managers. If there's a disconnect between what you're doing and what your manager wants, you're partly to blame. Don't wait until review time.
  8. Manage Across
Even if you work primarily alone, be sure to make time to understand your peers' roles and how they go about their jobs. Show an interest. Don't just choose a few friends and become part of a clique. High school is over. You never know when you may need people -- or be reporting to them.
  9. Communicate
Don't leave people waiting for answers. If you're in an email environment, return emails promptly. Let people know what you're doing. If you're working on a project, always ask yourself who needs to know about it, then tell them. Talk to people; give them a heads up. And when someone helps you out, be sure to thank them. It's amazing this even needs to be on a list, but bad communicators abound. Don't be one of them.
  10. Make Time for Play
Have fun. Work hard, but smile while you're doing it. No one likes a grump. Approach each day with a positive spirit and stay loose. Enjoy your family and friends as well. Make time for them -- and you. It's called work-life balance. All work and no play makes life a chore.

Tips for school leavers

Tips for school leavers

students

While there are more places being offered by universities in 2011 some people will still miss out on a spot but the CEO of PVS Work find, Therese Mulherin, says there is no need to panic.

PVS Work find is part of the Job Services Australia network and as such can offer free advice to school leavers in Queensland, NSW, the ACT, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

Here are Ms Mulherin’s tips for getting your career started if you don’t get into university.

  1. Reassess your goals. It is important to reassess what you are seeking to achieve and why it is important to you. Do this by writing down the five key motivators/things you are looking for in your work and in your private life.
  2. Understand the idea of career pathways and career mapping..Talk to an expert such as a Job Services Australia provider like PVS Work find about your areas of interest. You will be amazed at the range of options that may enable you to look at alternative study, training and employment options that you may not have considered.
  3. Stay focused….Remember what you are trying to achieve and that it may take time and effort for you to reach your goal. Staying motivated will help you focus on the task at hand. Use other people to help stay motivated – your friends, family and people trying to achieve the same goal.
  4. Make use of the extensive support available….There are a range of services that you can access depending on your circumstances. These vary from government agencies to private organisations. The best way to start is by going to talk to a Job Services Australia provider such as PVS Work find who can tell you what you are eligible for - be it income support, training subsidies or traineeships/apprenticeships.
  5. Access the range of training and skills development available to you…The best way to start on the pathway to achieving your goal is by building your skills. Every skill you learn will be of use and open up opportunities to you.
  6. Develop your employability skills…..It is important to learn about the world of work and understand what your future employers will be looking for - not just your particular skills, but also your ability to be part of a team and be reliable.
  7. Take an interest in what is going on around you……Find out what other people are doing through your networks and importantly find out what is going on in and around your area. When you are entering the world of work you will be mixing with people of all ages and backgrounds so it is important to understand your community.
  8. Set yourself a routine…..It is sometimes hard after leaving school to get back into a routine. While time off can be relaxing at the start, the fact that you have no “timetable” may get you down after a while. Set yourself tasks on a weekly basis.
  9. Develop a support network…..To stay motivated it is important that you have people around you who can support you and encourage you to remain on track. These can be your friends, your family, people you meet who are trying to achieve the same goals as you and consultants and organisations that are assisting you.
  10. Most importantly never give up!…..Remember that you may need to assess and change your goals along the way and it may take you longer than you thought to achieve your target. You’ll learn new skills along the way and it’ll be worth it when you get there!

ISB launches certification course for CIOs

ISB launches certification course for CIOs

In an attempt to help chief information officers (CIOs) align with their companies better, Hyderabad-based Indian School of Business (ISB) has introduced a new course, called Global CIO Certification Programme, in association with the CIO Association of India.

isb -1

"The course seeks to expand thinking beyond traditional information technology (IT), organisational boundaries and equip current and future CIOs with innovative and cutting-edge business tools that will help them drive informed decision making, predict and analyse risks and use low-cost rapid innovation to create top-line growth," said Ravi Bapna, executive director of Srini Raju Centre for Information Technology and the Networked Economy at the ISB.

The certification will be in two stages and the first batch is slated to begin in the third week of October. The first batch will have 25 CIOs from various sectors and the ISB has partnered with the CIO Association of India that has more than 1,000 members. The three-day executive education programme, will cost Rs 75,000.

ISB -2

This is the first time that such a programme has been initiated and ISB launched it with the intent of offering next-level grooming to the CIOs and to help CIOs make strategic moves, integrating IT to be part of the overall growth of the company.

CIOs usually are isolated as heads of their vertical and this certification will help in their overall growth. The industry, according to Bapna, was very excited and hence the association agreed to partner the institute.

ISB -3

The first level of certification -- efficiency level -- includes bringing in the latest trends in business intelligence, social media type of applications and data mining to target customers more efficiently in three days and create standardised issues. The second level is when the CIOs go back to their companies and participate in active learning on applied projects for another three days.

"This is when they become ready for the innovation stage and use IT to innovate in their business. This is a first of its kind initiative in India and has already generated a high level of interest in the business community," said Bapna.

11 IIMs to offer about 2600 seats; 1235 for general category

11 IIMs to offer about 2600 seats; 1235 for general category

With 15 per cent lesser number of candidates taking the Common Admission Test (CAT) this year and the number of seats in all the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) put together increased, is there a better chance for a candidate to get in?

11 IIMs to offer about 2600 seats; 1235 for general category

The IIMs have started talking about handling their biggest batch already, but with the expansion to accommodate the Non-creamy layer Other Backward Classes (NC-OBC) category students as per the directions of the Supreme Court finally in place, the intake capacity of the brand IIM has reached a total of about 2600 seats. This figure also includes the number of seats that all the new IIMs (Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak and even Trichy) will be offering.

All the government institutes were asked by the Supreme Court ruling that they would have to accommodate 27 per cent of NC-OBC candidates. Institutions, which included the IIMs and IITs, had agreed to accommodate the NC-OBC category, but only on the condition that they would not reduce the number of general and other category seats. For this, the institutes (older six IIMs - Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Bangalore, Indore, Kozhikode and Lucknow) brought about a 54 per cent hike in the total number of seats, offering 27 per cent of the seats to NC-OBC candidates with the number of seats for general category, SC, ST and Differently Abled categories remaining the same.

These means that of the 2600 seats offered by the 11 IIMs, there are about 1235 seats that can accommodate candidates from the general category. In the academic year beginning 2007, the total number of seats offered by IIMs were about 1400 of which the general category seats were almost 1043. So, the effective increase in the number of seats for general category students is less than 200, inclusive of those offered by the five new IIMs. If the candidate is from the NC-OBC category then, there is some good news. There are now almost 700 seats especially for this category of candidates.

Interestingly, the number of General category candidates taking CAT 2010 has dropped by one per cent to 81 per cent compared to that in CAT 2009. The percentage of NC-OBC category candidates taking the test remains the same at 11 per cent.

The other thing that is becoming commonplace on the institute websites but has been existing for a few years now is the institutes inviting overseas candidates. Every year, IIM-A alone admits overseas candidates who constitute 5-10 per cent of the batch. "Though there is no separate category like the overseas category, the students with the overseas certificate who meet the eligibility criteria are considered like any other domestic students. These students have to submit their GMAT scores and if they get selected, they have to appear for the interviews with all the other candidates, selected through CAT scores," says professor Diptesh Ghosh, the Admissions chairperson for IIM-A.

So these overseas candidates, most of whom have been working abroad for a couple of years and want to pursue their higher education, compete with the domestic candidates. Even these candidates can apply for admission under a specific criteria - NC-OBC / SC / ST / DA so they would be considered under that particular category. The fees for these candidates are more or less equal to the domestic students, but to be paid in US dollars.

The older IIMs have upgraded their facilities and developed their infrastructure like new hostel buildings and class rooms to accommodate the seat expansion. This could be one of the best times to join these institutes with the brand new hostel rooms and new academic blocks. One thing that almost all the IIMs are lagging behind is on the student-teacher ratio front. With the number of students increasing in the flagship Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), most of these institutes also offer the Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM), executive education programme (PGPX) and Management Development Programmes (MDP). Each of these institutes, including the new ones need atleast an appointment of 10 to 15 permanent faculty members to be in a comfortable situation and to reach a student teacher ratio of around 10:1.

Here's the break down of seats that the IIMs are offering:

Indigenous Tejas fighter squadron by 2013

Indigenous Tejas fighter squadron by 2013

Eye in the sky: Tejas

Nearly three decades after it was conceptualised, the country's first indegenous combat jet received its initial operational clearance, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) saying it would form its first squadron of the fighter in 2013.tejas The Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) 'is expected to get the final operational clearance (FOC) in the next two years for induction and formation of its squadron by 2013 or early 2014,' the IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Naik said.

He was speaking after the initial operational clearance (IOC) for the aircraft was accorded with Defence Minister A.K. Antony handing over a formal 'Release to Service Certificate'tejas1 The squadron, with the initial order of 20 fighters, will be located at the IAF's Salur air base near Coimbatore in southern Tamil Nadu as a frontline aerial combat vehicle.tejas2 At an estimated cost of Rs.190 crore ($42 million) per aircraft, the Mark-I variant of the lean and mean flying machine would cost the exchequer about Rs.3,800 crore for the first squadron.

'The cost of the Tejas trainer variant and Mark II version with enhanced engine (GE-414) will be about Rs.210 crore each and Rs.4,200 crore for the second lot of 20 jets for the second squadron,' state-run aircraft manufacturer Hindustan.tejas3 Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) chairman and managing director Ashok Nayak told reporters later.

Antony handing over the service certificate of Tejas marked India's entry into the elite club of a few countries with the capability to manufacture combat aircraft from scratch.tejas4 The supersonic fourth generation fighter will form a 200-strong fleet for the IAF to replace its ageing Soviet-era MiG-21 fleet and increase the squadron strength to 10 as a potent strike force over the next two decades.

'This is a momentous occasion that the nation has been waiting for towards building our own multirole combat aircraft,' a beaming Antony said on the historic occasion at the HAL airport in this aerospace hub. tejas5 Noting that a state-of-the-art indigenous combat aircraft would go a long way in enhancing national security and the pride of the nation, Antony said that the country was poised for a major turning point with the IOC for Tejas.

'The certification process by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (Cemilac) has evolved the roadmap for release to service certification,' Antony said.

tejas6

The IOC involved specific processes, including validation tests to determine the aircraft's various operational functions, including avionics, sub-systems, thrust, aerodynamics, propulsion and radar.

'This is the first time an indigenously designed and developed military fighter aircraft has been certified for air force operations,' state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) official K. Jayaprakash Rao told IANS here.tejas7 The fly-by-wire Tejas, which was beset with chronic delays and cost over-runs since 1983, has been developed by the state-run Aeronautical Defence Agency (ADA) and manufactured by HAL in its Bangalore complex in partnership with a host of defence R& D establishments and other private aerospace firms.

Successive delays caused by multiple factors, including sanctions by the US over a decade ago against India for conducting the second nuclear test in May 1998, led the project cost to rise to a whopping Rs.12,000 crore, twice the initial cost in the mid-1980s.tejas8 HAL 'will start delivering the full-fledged aircraft with weapons from 2013 onwards for induction and operation as part of the IAF fleet,' Antony said.

The ADA and HAL conducted 1,500 test flights involving 11 aircraft, including five prototypes in the past decade after its maiden flight Jan 4, 2001 as a technology demonstrator.tejas9Powered by the F404-GE-IN20 engine from the US-based General Electric as the indigenously developed Kaveri engine is still in development, the single-seater Tejas has been built with carbon composites and boasts of unstable aerodynamic configuration, quadruplex digital flight control system, glass cockpit and digital avionics for multirole capabilities with carefree manouevering.tejas10 The aircraft is capable of carrying assorted weapon loads and drop tanks on eight hard points.

'The indigenization level in Tejas is currently around 65 percent and will be scaled to 75-80 percent when production will be expanded to meet the IAF combat needs' V.K. Saraswat, scientific adviser to the defence minister pointed out.
