History

The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. The university aims to provide its students with a rich and varied academic environment that ensures opportunities for both intellectual development and the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills.

The University of Tokyo is known for the excellence of its faculty and students and ever since its foundation many of its graduates have gone on to become leaders in government, business, and the academic world.

Courses offered

As a leading research university, the University of Tokyo offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research across the full spectrum of academic activity.

Admission procedure/cycle (month/date)

To enrol in a faculty of the University of Tokyo you are required to pass the same general screening test as Japanese students or a special screening test for students who have graduated from foreign schools. You will require four years for graduation; six years for graduation from the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Veterinary Science in the Faculty of Agriculture. Most of the lectures in the faculties of the University of Tokyo are delivered in Japanese, even for foreign students. As a result, foreign students must master the Japanese language before they enrol in the University of Tokyo.

To enrol in a graduate school of The University of Tokyo as a Master's, Doctoral or Research Student, you are required to successfully pass an entrance examination conducted by the individual Graduate School. Scholarships offered: International students have three options for scholarships:

1. Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (Japan Student Services Organization) - Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers honours scholarships for privately financed international students who attend a university or graduate school in Japan, are of good character, have a good academic record, and require financial assistance to continue their studies as an international student. This scholarship is not available to Japanese Government scholarship students or foreign state-sponsored students.

2. Scholarship for International Students: The University of Tokyo Foundation

3. Provision of information regarding private organizations' scholarships - Approximately 80 private organizations offer scholarships to privately financed international students. There are two application methods -- recommendation by a university, and individual application. Although some organizations may start application invitations around October, the invitation process is carried out from January to April with most scholarship programs.
