US warns Indian students about "predatory visa fraud rings"

Washington: As another US university came under the scanner, the United States asked Indian students to be alert to the existence of 'predatory visa fraud rings and fraudulent document vendors'.

"We are looking into this matter, we're following the case closely, and we're in communication with the Government of India officials on it," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said on Friday, a day after a raid on the University of Northern Virginia.

Based in Annandale, a Washington suburb, the unaccredited, for-profit private university has some 2,400 students of which 90 percent are from India, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, registered at three locations in northern Virginia.

The US embassy in New Delhi has briefed the Ministry of External Affairs and the US Department of Homeland Security and the State Department have been in contact with the Indian Embassy in Washington, Toner said.

Declining to give details as an investigation is ongoing, the spokesman said "it's important to note that a hundred thousand Indians are receiving a good education at certified US institutions each year, and we certainly welcome the contribution of Indian students wishing to study in the United States."

"And of course, as always, we caution them to be alert to the existence of these so-called predatory visa fraud rings and fraudulent document vendors," he said.

Asked how US consulates or embassies in India issued visas for study at such institutions, Toner again declined comment in view of "an ongoing investigation".

"They've taken action against this school, and we're in close coordination with the Indian Government as we move forward. But beyond that, I don't want to comment on details," he said.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has warned the Northern Virginia University that it could withdraw the school's authorisation to admit foreign students.

Agency Spokesperson Cori Bassett, however, would not say why the action was taken, saying it is part of a pending investigation. The school remains open and certified and will have the chance to rebut the government's allegations.

IIM Kozhikode inducts 35 per cent women students in Post Graduate Programme|Education

Kochi: Continuing on its path of gender diversity for the second consecutive year, Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K) has taken in large number of women students, about 35 per cent, for its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) for the 2011-13 batch.

Of the total 341 students for the PGP, 121 are women, IIM-K said in a press release here. This is against last year's intake of 30 per cent.

Out of the women admitted, 84 have Common Admission Test percentile between 90 and 100.

Institute Director Debashis Chatterjee says 'giving prominence to girl students has become a trend in IIM-Kozhikode.

Last year also IIM-K had the maximum number of women students among all IIMs. Girls have always performed better than boys. Even in summer placements, they have been placed in better companies, he said, adding. this was all on merit.

'The female students have brought greater diversity both in the learning environment as well as in their academic and social profiles. It is truly a transformation process at IIM-K whereby students whose parental income is less than a lakh per year end up with top jobs around the world', he said.

IIM-K has been the trendsetter for business schools in the country with its consistent gender diversity drive, which is now emulated by others, the release said.

IIMK had implemented the Government norms on reservations to the backward and the economically weaker sections, the release said.

Out of 121 women students, 91 have engineering background, while 15 are either commerce or economics graduate. Three women are doctors and one is a law graduate. A male student is from medical background.

Chatterjee says there has been a change in income profile of parents of students coming to the institute. Though this could be a trend among all IIMs, in Kozhikode 7.94 per cent students have parents whose income is less than Rs one lakh per annum, 25 per cent students have parents earning Rs 10 lakh and above. Rest of the students have parents earning Rs 4-5 lakh per annum (12.70 per cent) and Rs 5-6 lakh per annum (8.73 per cent).

In IIM-Kozhikode, a majority of students -- 63.97 per cent have parents working either in government, PSUs or NGOs. Only 9.72 per cent students are children of professionals or private sector executives, the release said. Children of businessmen comprise 13.77 per cent of total students in the Institute.

Maximum students (12.65 per cent) are from Delhi followed by 12.05per cent from Maharashtra. Students from Uttar Pradesh have fared very well and comprise 9.71 per cent of its total strength.

Two Indian kids win Nasa Price

Two Class seven students of a school here have jointly won the second prize with a Romanian team in a competition conducted by NASA this year

M Srivatsan and Vasundhara Gautham of

Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram are the only participants from Tamil Nadu to win the competition.

Under 'Project IRIS' (International Research and Integration Station), they developed and designed an alternate habitat for human space settlement. The design won recognition for its detailed and in-depth representation of life and its necessities integrated in a space city.

Srivatsan said "the project was relatively easier as we imagined how life would be in another planet without the resources that Earth provides."

All basic essentials for sustaining human life - from food, sanitation, shelter and energy was provided. They also conceptualised the way of life - administration, governance, employment, culture and transportation.

"Srivatsan and Vasundhara worked for over three hours every day, brainstorming and designing this project. My only contribution was to inform them about the competition I came across on NASA website," said Manivanan, Srivatsan's father.

While Vasundhara took care of providing food and other biological aspects, Srivatsan dealt with the technical details.

The most important aspect of this project was use of 'quantum computers' which formed a crucial part of the space city and disseminated information to people via indirect interaction using dead human retina.

The duo worked on the project for less than six months and plan to participate in the same competition next year.

For the fiscal 2011-12, the FM has tweaked only the threshold income tax limit at the lowest levels of the slab which affects the commonest of the aam-aadmi. The new proposal has enhanced the exemption limit for the general category of individual tax-payers from Rs.1,60,000 to Rs.1,80,000; which will be uniform for both men and women. This will provide a uniform tax relief of Rs.2000 to every tax payer of this category.

BPO calls reach B-School campus

Mumbai: Business process outsourcing (BPO) firms that so far hired from tier three B-schools will now flaunt IIM graduates.

Take the case of Delhi-based BPO firm EXL Services which has managed to hire over 10 management graduates from India's premier Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. The highest ever for any BPO company so far, EXL Services has hired the IIM-A graduates for general managerial and consulting roles.

"This year we have been aggressive in hiring from B-schools as we want to grow our foot-print in these management schools. We have been hiring from B-schools since 2003-04, but that has always been limited to one or two students. This year we have managed to give offer letters to 10 students from IIM-A itself.

Last year we hired around seven management graduates from top B-schools," said Sanjay Gupta, Global HR Head, EXL Services. The company is visiting five to six more B-school campuses this year to meet its target of hiring 15-18 management graduates.

The company is of the view that the focus on management talent is due to the shift that the industry is witnessing as well as the work that is coming to the Indian players.

BPO and IT services firms have traditionally hired large number of students from engineering colleges and graduation colleges. But hiring from top B-schools has always been a tad difficult as students prefer to work with sectors like banking, consultancy, and FMCG.

The trend to hire more management graduates is however, not limited to EXL services alone or to the third party BPO sector. Captive BPOs of IT companies are also joining the bandwagon. IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) plans to hire over 1,200 management students for FY11 from B-schools across the nation. Of these the company has already extended offer letters to 557 students. TCS BPO has also made 129 offers so far.

According to Pandia Rajan, Chairman Ma Foi Randstad, this trend is prominent among the third party BPOs which need a strong marketing team. "With higher order processing migrating to India, BPOs these days are operating like any other company. Their growth needs are as important with various departments including marketing and HR growing," said Rajan.

Similarly, Infosys Technologies has extended 1,000 offers to B-schools students this year. This number is much higher than last years 463. For FY11 Infosys has already visited 57 B-schools.

IT services and KPO firm Syntel agrees with this trend. "We have hired management graduates in the past. With the shift in the industry the talent required in the industry is different. You also have to remember that this sector is people intensive, you need qualified managers. You cannot just blame the students for not being interested in joining this industry. IT services and BPO firms have never interacted with them. With firms now getting aggressive they are finding interest as well," said Mushtaque Aalam, Global Head, Recruitment, Syntel.

Students from management schools especially from premier institutes draw much higher salary than an engineering student. For instance, at entry level, an average management student would draw between Rs 3.6 lakh and Rs 6 lakh whereas, salary of a management graduate from a premier institute would be over 100 per cent.

Similarly, a fresh engineer graduate gets an entry level salary of Rs 3.3 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh. Category B management college students draw start salary of Rs 4.6 to 4.7 lakh from the top IT services firm.

"It's the job profiles student look at rather than looking at the industry. EXL Service offered consulting and general managerial posts to IIM-A graduates which was interesting," said a placement committee member from IIM-A.

Other than opting for other sectors, management students, especially from tier-1 B-schools, tend to draw very high salaries. "A management student always manages to draw better salary. That also sometimes acts as hurdle for industry players to hire in large numbers as students like higher salary and perks that are generally provided by i-banks and consultancy firms," said Gupta. Industry experts also point out that the need to hire more management talent is also because of the work that is coming to India.

"Whether it is the IT industry or BPO, they have moved on to handle high-end work for clients. For instance, BPO's are no longer providing only voice work. Large BPO firms are managing processes like accounting, analytics and other core activities. For IT firms, consultancy is becoming core as they move away from application development and maintenance kind of work," said an industry observer.

What’s so extraordinary – It boasts of using adaptive streaming which will practically let you watch Videos without any interruption or buffering.

What’s not so extraordinary – You cannot download any show or movie as it uses adaptive streaming.

2. ItsHacked

This one is particularly a niche website (blog) for people who are interesting in topics like Hacking, Network Security, Identity theft etc.

What’s so extraordinary – The website is fast, looks simple and uses a Tag cloud also.

What’s not so extraordinary – Frequency of posts is low and design do not looks like a priority.

3. UK Government Data

Yeah, yeah I know… Please do ask me what’s so interesting about sharing a Government site with you! My answer would be “see it yourself and then decide”.

What’s so extraordinary – Being a Government website, it’s nicely designed and organized. The best part about this website is that it opens up a lot of data from the Government of UK for the public to see, analyse and see summaries. You can even create applications using the wide data available.

This one is from the house of Google which has made an interesting move by trying to help Parents and older people nice stuff about technology and a great ‘How-to’ series. Anybody can introduce their parents or someone they know of having less knowledge related to things on a Computer.

What’s so extraordinary – The website is nicely designed and looks cool, yeah the Google style! It is simple & quick to use and has nothing much hidden.

What’s not so extraordinary – The website provides a platform for the young ones to share Technology videos to their parents and other old pals. However nothing apart from videos has been put in place, also what if someone doesn’t even know how to install the plug-ins on a browser to run videos!

What else will you need if there is a dedicated blog explaining you different tips and tricks about your iPhone, isn’t that cool? Everyday the blog comes out with some new application for iPhone which let you decide what all to keep on your own piece.

What’s so extraordinary – The blog is truly dedicated to iPhone and just iPhone. The frequency of posts is quite good for now and quality of content is fine.

What’s not so extraordinary – Design blocks are not organized properly and the colour scheme must be revamped. The topic is displayed in a font which looks quite not so good to my eyes.

[Update] Gmail resets, users panic!

Yesterday morning though did not happen personally to me, heard a lot of noise in the Google gallery. News about Gmail accidentally deleting entire data of about 5,00,000 Gmail accounts started spreading like wildfire and here’s a sample.

What did the Bug do?

An unknown bug cleaned up entire Gmail accounts of many users giving them a feel as if they have just opened a new account. Even the chat records vanished with 3 new emails welcoming the user to Gmail.

What now?

Google has already acknowledged the problem and has issued a statement that the engineers are working on the problem and accounts will be restored soon. There is another update which says only 0.08% of the accounts got effected by the bug (or 1,50,000 Gmail accounts) and not 5,00,000 accounts as believed earlier.

Latest: Recent updates claim that some of the accounts have already been restored and rest will be done as early as possible, but no specific timeframe provided.

The term search has become synonymous with the name of Google because of the search engines dominance. The openness of Google is obviously something that makes it a great blog. When people search online for certain keywords, that information can be tracked and used to provide better results.

By lately many people prefer more privacy when it comes to search habits. There is also the idea of having search engine churn out links which are valid for all ages. Yippy search is a new search service which tries to be family friendly and promises privacy.

What all IE9 still does not support?

Using W3C tests, IE9 RC (Internet Explorer) did try to prove its claim that it supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 almost 100%, but then HTML5Test and Caniuse did spoil the entire show. The score given by HTML5Test is definitely not so impressive for IE9 RC which awards Firefox 4 Beta with a score of 255 over 130 to the former.

Few facts about IE9 RC (even with a 100% W3C score)

Dragging and dropping files from Desktop is not possible.

JavaScript Strict mode & offline application cache is not supported.
CSS3 transitions, Text Shadow, Gradients, Border Image & Flex box model does not work.
HTML5 History, ClassList & File API are not a reality yet.
SMIL animations (SVG), WebGL (3D) and FormData are not supported.

The rumor gears are really starting to churn with regard Apple’s upcoming MacBook Pro refresh and now we have a purported leak of the upcoming spec sheet for the new 13-inch model. The highlight is a note (and image, above) seemingly confirming that Apple will implement Intel’s Light Peak high-speed interconnect, renaming it the Thunderbolt. Yes, we know there’s an HTC handset headed to Verizon with that very same name — and we’ve checked the USPTO archives, Verizon’s the only tech company with any trademark claim filed for "Thunderbolt" — but Apple has done weirder things before. Also notable are the apparent inclusion of an SDXC card reader and the absence of a discrete GPU chip, indicating that perhaps the new Core i5 integrated graphics from Intel are finally good enough to convince Cupertino to rely on them full time. Economy: The economy stabilised by the time he took over in 1999 and started an unbelievable growth trajectory. He firmly supported disinvestment, but not blind privatisation. As Manmohan Singh said at a recent rally, the economy grew at 5.6% during the Vajpayee tenure, indeed a very impressive growth rate.
Home Affairs: This is where the Vajpayee Government had its failures. It failed to check the VHP's protests in 2002 in order to celebrate the demolition of the Babri Masjid. He also failed to take any concrete action against Narendra Modi's Government. You may argue that he upheld democracy by allowing the people to judge - and it thus remains debatable wher you can blame him.
Biggest Embarassment: The Tehelka scandal rocked his ministry and the Coffin scandal involving George Fernandes portrayed his ministry as quite corrupt.
Biggest Advantage: He's a 10 time Lok Sabha member and has won the "Best Parliamentarian" award. I am pleased to put a distinguished parliamentarian on top of this list.

Foreign Policy:Jawaharlal Nehru's foreign policy was flawed beyond repair. His Non-Aligned Movement and more importantly, his blind trust of China exploded in his later years. Problems that he created (like Kashmir) haunt India till this day.
Economy: The Indian economy under Nehru was rebuilding itself. The foundations laid by Nehru were strong enough to sustain India through a lot of dangerous periods. Food security also improved vastly and industrial growth also remained consistent.
Home Affairs: Democracy took deep roots under Nehru. All institution of independent and democratic India (the courts, the army, the police) were set up and remain strong till this day. If India has survived till this day, a lot of credit goes to Nehru for letting democracy take off in India.
Biggest Embarassment: The defeat to China will remain forever to portray Nehru's later years as weak and incompetent.

Foreign Policy: His single biggest foreign policy success remains the Indo-US Nuclear Deal.
Economy: The biggest challenge for the Indian economy ever took place in his tenure. The economy still maintained a 6-7% growth rate and never went into recession. Two stimuli packages were announced and a slew of other measures taken. Though the Left clipped his wings, he still managed to bring stability to the economy.
Home Affairs: Terrorism marked his tenure. The rapidity of attacks increased. Thrice in Delhi, twice in Mumbai - and the Government failed to take any measures. It reached a peak in 2008, only after which the Government removed the Home Minister. It is noticeable that since P Chidambaram took over, only 1 terrorist attack took place.
Biggest Embarassment: The presence of inefficient and often corrupt ministers like Shibu Soren in his cabinet and the ruckus created during the trust vote marred his credentials.
Biggest Advantage: A clean image remains his USP. He's slowly being recognized as a man of clean politics.

Indira Gandhi

Foreign Policy:Indira Gandhi scores highest on foreign policy. She led India to a victory over Pakistan in 1971 and captured 1 lakh Prisoners of War. She presided over India's first nuclear explosion and stood tall before Nixon. She withstood US ire and still managed to reinstill the sense of national pride. It should be noted that Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the one who called her "Durga" after the Bangladesh liberation.
Economy: The economy was a problem during most of Indira Gandhi's tenure. She began with a huge economic crisis and the country went through cycles of deflation and inflation. However, the green revolution that she presided over has ensured India's food security till date.
Home Affairs: Indira Gandhi could have been on top of the list just that I am not comfortable with the idea of putting on top a person who didn't believe full-heartedly in democracy. A Prime Minister has got to respect democracy. But declaring Emergency and by turning the Congress into a sycophants' club, Indira Gandhi left a very bad legacy for democracy in India.
Biggest Embarassment: The emergency will continue to define her. All those who say she's the best Prime Minister India had should remember that had the Army not refused to be part of her scheme, our democracy might have been endangered.
Biggest Advantage: She seems to have been destiny's child. Despite the emergency, she remained so popular with the masses.

TOP 10 GREATEST Mathematicians of all times

Often called the language of the universe, mathematics is fundamental to our understanding of the world and, as such, is vitally important in a modern society such as ours. Everywhere you look it is likely mathematics has made an impact, from the faucet in your kitchen to the satellite that beams your television programs to your home. As such, great mathematicians are undoubtedly going to rise above the rest and have their name embedded within history. This list documents some such people. I have rated them based on contributions and how they effected mathematics at the time, as well as their lasting effect. I also suggest one looks deeper into the lives of these men, as they are truly fascinating people and their discoveries are astonishing – too much to include here. As always, such lists are highly subjective, and as such please include your own additions in the comments!

Leonhard Euler

If Gauss is the Prince, Euler is the King. Living from 1707 to 1783, he is regarded as the greatest mathematician to have ever walked this planet. It is said that all mathematical formulas are named after the next person after Euler to discover them. In his day he was ground breaking and on par with Einstein in genius. His primary (if that’s possible) contribution to the field is with the introduction of mathematical notation including the concept of a function (and how it is written as f(x)), shorthand trigonometric functions, the ‘e’ for the base of the natural logarithm (The Euler Constant), the Greek letter Sigma for summation and the letter ‘/i’ for imaginary units, as well as the symbol pi for the ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter. All of which play a huge bearing on modern mathematics, from the every day to the incredibly complex.

As well as this, he also solved the Seven Bridges of Koenigsberg problem in graph theory, found the Euler Characteristic for connecting the number of vertices, edges and faces of an object, and (dis)proved many well known theories, too many to list. Furthermore, he continued to develop calculus, topology, number theory, analysis and graph theory as well as much, much more – and ultimately he paved the way for modern mathematics and all its revelations. It is probably no coincidence that industry and technological developments rapidly increased around this time.

Carl Friedrich Gauss

Child prodigy Gauss, the ‘Prince of Mathematics’, made his first major discovery whilst still a teenager, and wrote the incredible Disquisitions Arithmetical, his magnum opus, by the time he was 21. Many know Gauss for his outstanding mental ability – quoted to have added the numbers 1 to 100 within seconds whilst attending primary school (with the aid of a clever trick). The local Duke, recognizing his talent, sent him to Collegium Carolinum before he left for Gottingen (at the time it was the most prestigious mathematical university in the world, with many of the best attending). After graduating in 1798 (at the age of 22), he began to make several important contributions in major areas of mathematics, most notably number theory (especially on Prime numbers). He went on to prove the fundamental theorem of algebra, and introduced the Gaussian gravitational constant in physics, as well as much more – all this before he was 24! Needless to say, he continued his work up until his death at the age of 77, and had made major advances in the field which have echoed down through time.

G. F. Bernhard Riemann

Bernhard Riemann, born to a poor family in 1826, would rise to become one of the worlds prominent mathematicians in the 19th Century. The list of contributions to geometry are large, and he has a wide range of theorems bearing his name. To name just a few: Riemannian Geometry, Riemannian Surfaces and the Riemann Integral. However, he is perhaps most famous (or infamous) for his legendarily difficult Riemann Hypothesis; an extremely complex problem on the matter of the distributions of prime numbers. Largely ignored for the first 50 years following its appearance, due to few other mathematicians actually understanding his work at the time, it has quickly risen to become one of the greatest open questions in modern science, baffling and confounding even the greatest mathematicians. Although progress has been made, its has been incredibly slow. However, a prize of $1 million has been offered from the Clay Maths Institute for a proof, and one would almost undoubtedly receive a Fields medal if under 40 (The Nobel prize of mathematics). The fallout from such a proof is hypothesized to be large: Major encryption systems are thought to be breakable with such a proof, and all that rely on them would collapse. As well as this, a proof of the hypothesis is expected to use ‘new mathematics’. It would seem that, even in death, Riemann’s work may still pave the way for new contributions to the field, just as he did in life.

Euclid

Living around 300BC, he is considered the Father of Geometry and his magnum opus: Elements, is one the greatest mathematical works in history, with its being in use in education up until the 20th century. Unfortunately, very little is known about his life, and what exists was written long after his presumed death. Nonetheless, Euclid is credited with the instruction of the rigorous, logical proof for theorems and conjectures. Such a framework is still used to this day, and thus, arguably, he has had the greatest influence of all mathematicians on this list. Alongside his Elements were five other surviving works, thought to have been written by him, all generally on the topic of Geometry or Number theory. There are also another five works that have, sadly, been lost throughout history.

René Descartes

French Philosopher, Physicist and Mathematician Rene Descartes is best known for his ‘Cogito Ergo Sum’ philosophy. Despite this, the Frenchman, who lived 1596 to 1650, made ground breaking contributions to mathematics. Alongside Newton and Leibniz, Descartes helped provide the foundations of modern calculus (which Newton and Leibniz later built upon), which in itself had great bearing on the modern day field. Alongside this, and perhaps more familiar to the reader, is his development of Cartesian Geometry, known to most as the standard graph (Square grid lines, x and y axis, etc.) and its use of algebra to describe the various locations on such. Before this most geometers used plain paper (or another material or surface) to perform their art. Previously, such distances had to be measured literally, or scaled. With the introduction of Cartesian Geometry this changed dramatically, points could now be expressed as points on a graph, and as such, graphs could be drawn to any scale, also these points did not necessarily have to be numbers. The final contribution to the field was his introduction of superscripts within algebra to express powers. And thus, like many others in this list, contributed to the development of modern mathematical notation.

Alan Turing

Computer Scientist and Cryptanalyst Alan Turing is regarded my many, if not most, to be one of the greatest minds of the 20th Century. Having worked in the Government Code and Cypher School in Britain during the second world war, he made significant discoveries and created ground breaking methods of code breaking that would eventually aid in cracking the German Enigma Encryptions. Undoubtedly affecting the outcome of the war, or at least the time-scale.

After the end of the war he invested his time in computing. Having come up with idea of a computing style machine before the war, he is considered one of the first true computer scientists. Furthermore, he wrote a range of brilliant papers on the subject of computing that are still relevant today, notably on Artificial Intelligence, on which he developed the Turing test which is still used to evaluate a computers ‘intelligence’. Remarkably, he began in 1948 working with D. G. Champernowne, an undergraduate acquaintance on a computer chess program for a machine not yet in existence. He would play the ‘part’ of the machine in testing such programs.

Leonardo Pisano Blgollo

Blgollo, also known as Leonardo Fibonacci, is perhaps one of the middle ages greatest mathematicians. Living from 1170 to 1250, he is best known for introducing the infamous Fibonacci Series to the western world. Although known to Indian mathematicians since approximately 200 BC, it was, nonetheless, a truly insightful sequence, appearing in biological systems frequently. In addition, from this Fibonacci also contributed greatly to the introduction of the Arabic numbering system. Something he is often forgotten for.

Haven spent a large portion of his childhood within North Africa he learned the Arabic numbering system, and upon realizing it was far simpler and more efficient then the bulky Roman numerals, decided to travel the Arab world learning from the leading mathematicians of the day. Upon returning to Italy in 1202, he published his Liber Abaci, whereupon the Arabic numbers were introduced and applied to many world situations to further advocate their use. As a result of his work the system was gradually adopted and today he is considered a major player in the development of modern mathematics.

Isaac Newton and Wilhelm Leibniz

I have placed these two together as they are both often given the honor of being the ‘inventor’ of modern infinitesimal calculus, and as such have both made monolithic contributions to the field. To start, Leibniz is often given the credit for introducing modern standard notation, notably the integral sign. He made large contributions to the field of Topology. Whereas all round genius Isaac Newton has, because of the grand scientific epic Principia, generally become the primary man hailed by most to be the actual inventor of calculus. Nonetheless, what can be said is that both men made considerable vast contributions in their own manner.

Andrew Wiles

The only currently living mathematician on this list, Andrew Wiles is most well known for his proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem: That no positive integers, a, b and c can satisfy the equation a^n+b^n=c^n For n greater then 2. (If n=2 it is the Pythagoras Formula). Although the contributions to math are not, perhaps, as grand as other on this list, he did ‘invent’ large portions of new mathematics for his proof of the theorem. Besides, his dedication is often admired by most, as he quite literally shut himself away for 7 years to formulate a solution. When it was found that the solution contained an error, he returned to solitude for a further year before the solution was accepted. To put in perspective how ground breaking and new the math was, it had been said that you could count the number of mathematicians in the world on one hand who, at the time, could understand and validate his proof. Nonetheless, the effects of such are likely to only increase as time passes (and more and more people can understand it).

Pythagoras of Samos

Greek Mathematician Pythagoras is considered by some to be one of the first great mathematicians. Living around 570 to 495 BC, in modern day Greece, he is known to have founded the Pythagorean cult, who were noted by Aristotle to be one of the first groups to actively study and advance mathematics. He is also commonly credited with the Pythagorean Theorem within trigonometry. However, some sources doubt that is was him who constructed the proof (Some attribute it to his students or Baudhayana, who lived some 300 years earlier in India). Nonetheless, the effect of such, as with large portions of fundamental mathematics, is commonly felt today, with the theorem playing a large part in modern measurements and technological equipment, as well as being the base of a large portion of other areas and theorems in mathematics. But, unlike most ancient theories, it played a bearing on the development of geometry, as well as opening the door to the study of mathematics as a worthwhile endeavor. Thus, he could be called the founding father of modern mathematics

Watson gains lead of more than $30,000 as first game ends

NEW YORK — The computer brained its human competition as the first game of the Man vs. Machine competition on "Jeopardy" came to a close.

On the 30-question game board, veteran "Jeopardy" champs Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter managed only five correct responses between them during the Double Jeopardy round that aired Tuesday. They ended the first game of the two-game face-off with paltry earnings of $4,800 and $10,400, respectively.

Watson, their IBM supercomputer nemesis, emerged from the Final Jeopardy round with $35,734.

Tuesday's competition, a continuation of the game that aired Monday, began with Rutter and Watson tied. Jennings (who has the longest "Jeopardy!" winning streak at 74 games) chose the first trivia clue, which referred to a skin malady "also known as Hansen's disease." Watson jumped in with the correct response: "What is leprosy?"

It followed that with bang-on responses Franz Liszt, dengue fever, violin, Rachmaninoff and albinism, then landed on a Daily Double in the "Cambridge" category.

"I'll wager $6,435," Watson said in its pleasant electronic voice.

"I won't ask," said host Alex Trebek, wondering along with everybody else where that figure came from.

In any case, Watson's wager paid off. Sir Christopher Wren was the correct response, and Watson's total vaulted to $21,035 as the humans stood by helplessly.

The computer ran up a commanding lead as Double Jeopardy ended and the contestants went into the Final Jeopardy round. All three had to record how much money they'd risk on a final question, relating to "U.S. Cities."

The Final Jeopardy clue? "Its largest airport is named for a World War II hero; its second largest, for a World War II battle."

Jennings and Rutter bet big, and came up with the right response: "What is Chicago?" Watson bombed. All it could manage was a guess: "What is Toronto????" ... which is not a U.S. city. But because the computer's wager was just $947, it held onto the win.

The trio will return on Wednesday, when their second game is aired. The overall winner, based on the cumulative game score, will collect $1 million in real money. Second and third place will get $300,000 and $200,000, respectively. IBM says all of Watson's winnings will go to charity; Jennings and Rutter plan to give away half of their shares.

The bouts were taped at the IBM research center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., last month.

University of Chicago mulls India centre | University Of Chicago Plans To Open An India Centre

Mumbai: University of Chicago is planning to open an India centre that would facilitate research, student exchange programmes and executive education, among others.

"We are finalising the details on this front. There is a faculty committee which studied various locations in India and decided on New Delhi. Right now we are evaluating the location for the centre in Delhi," said Sunil Kumar, dean, Chicago Booth School of Business. Kumar's five-year term as dean began this January.

With its proposed centre, University of Chicago will join the ranks of a dozen international universities which have firmed up plans to set up centres in India, in the past one year.

At present, over half-a-dozen international B-schools are offering executive education programmes in the country.

Three choices for sham US varsity students; radio tags come off 2 Indians

Washington: US immigration authorities removed radio tags of a couple of Indian students of a sham university in California as it asked all duped students to contact them directly to find out their options.

Ankle bracelet monitors of two of the 18 tagged students of California-based Tri Valley University (TVU), some 90 percent of them from India, mostly Andhra Pradesh, were removed after they went to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with an immigration attorney.

Immigration attorney, Kalpana Peddibhotla plans to take some more Indian students to ICE next week "and is optimistic that this might have positive outcome as well," according to an Indian official.

The students had attended a free legal aid camp organised by the Indian Consulate in San Francisco in association with the South Asian Bar Association.

Over 1,500 TVU students of face the prospect of deportation following the closure of the school on charges of visa fraud unless they can get admission in another institution

For a student to maintain an active immigration status, they must show proof that they are making reasonable process toward completing coursework and physically attend classes.

Meanwhile, ICE has offered the students essentially three options:

First, Report to ICE to be processed for voluntary departure from the United States; Second, departing the US on their own; and

Third, file for reinstatement with US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The first option allows the students "to leave under their own power on a day of their choice, to remain in the United States without fear of being arrested while waiting to depart, and keeps their immigration history clean," according to ICE spokesman Virginia Kice.

ICE has posted an advisory on the Student and Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVP) link on ICE's website -- http://www.ice.gov/sevis/tri-valley-110118.htm-to tell students how to contact an SEVP representative to obtain information about their options.

"When you call, SEVP will provide you with your options including the option to depart from the United States without an otherwise possibly applicable bar to re-admission in the future," says the advisory issued to the TVU students.

ICE has also informed all schools and colleges that SEVP had either cancelled or terminated all initial, active and transfer-in student records associated with TVU.

If a former TVU student applies for acceptance at another school, it is the responsibility of the school/college authorities to obtain an enrolment application and all subsidiary documents typically requested in order to make an admissions decision, including an assessment of the student's finances.

"And they must maintain these documents in the F-1 student's academic record," the memo to schools said.

"If a student gains admission, a designated school official should contact the SEVP Help Desk at 800-892-4829 or SEVIShelpdesk@hp.com to manage the student record. Do not initiate a new SEVIS record for the student," it said.

ICE has also informed schools and colleges across the country that the employment authorisation for F-1 students at TVU terminated Jan 19.

According to a federal complaint filed in a California court in January, the University helped foreign nationals illegally acquire immigration status.

The complaint alleged that while students were admitted to various residential and on-line courses of the university and on paper lived in California, in reality they "illegally" worked in places as far away as Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Texas.

REVALUATION PROCEDURE
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2009 EXAMINATIONS

1. All the candidates irrespective of the MARKS/GRADE secured in the University Examinations can apply for Revaluation.

2.To apply, a student can opt for any one of the following two options:
Option 1: Apply for Revaluation only with a fee of Rs.400/- per script.

Option 2: Apply for Photocopy–cum–Revaluation with a fee of Rs.700/- per script.

3.Only Candidates who have applied for Photocopy-cum-Revaluation are eligible for the Review for their answer script (by remitting the prescribed fee) only after the Publication of the Revaluation Results, if not satisfied with the revalued results. Those who have applied only for Revaluation are not eligible for the review of their answer scripts. The details of the Review Procedure will be announced along with their revaluation results.

4.Photocopying and Revaluation work are being carried out simultaneously. If any discrepancy is noticed in the valuation after getting the Photocopy, the same may be brought to the notice of the Controller of Examinations through their respective Colleges within 3 days from the date of receipt of the Photocopy.

5.Separate application has been prescribed for Revaluation and Photocopy-cum-Revaluation. The applications may be obtained from the Office of the Principal of the College.

The last date for applying for Revaluation is 19-01-2010 and the students can apply from 08-01-2010 onwards.
